In John 17, Jesus prays a deeply personal prayer for His followers, and one theme rises above the rest: unity. He asks the Father more than once that believers would be one, just as He and the Father are one. That’s a striking picture of unity—not surface-level agreement, but deep, relational oneness.
What makes this even more significant is the purpose behind it. Jesus prays for unity so that the world may believe in Him. Unity is meant to be a witness. It shows the world something true about who Jesus is.
When we look around today, though, we often see division—in the church, in our communities, and in our relationships. It can feel discouraging, even overwhelming, especially knowing that unity was so central to Jesus’ prayer. Maybe He emphasized it because He knew how difficult it would be for us to live out.
Unity begins with being rooted in Christ. As we grow closer to Him, we become more able to live in peace with others. And while we may not be able to fix division on a large scale, we can pursue unity in the places right in front of us—our homes, our families, our workplaces, and our churches.
In seasons of tension or conflict, we can take Jesus’ words and pray them directly into our situations. Even when circumstances don’t immediately change, God can begin to soften hearts and bring people together in ways we couldn’t orchestrate ourselves.
Wherever there is division in your life right now, don’t give up on unity. Pray for it, even if it feels impossible. Jesus did—and He invites us to do the same.
