Ephesians 5:8–9 reminds us: “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light…”
On Christmas Day—whether you’re sitting quietly by the tree with a warm drink or winding down after a full celebration—this is a moment to pause and treasure what God has done. Like Mary on that first Christmas night, we’re invited to ponder the meaning of Christ’s arrival and what it has changed in us.
Paul’s words in Ephesians are striking. He doesn’t say we were surrounded by darkness—he says we were darkness. Chaos, emptiness, confusion, and hopelessness once defined us. But Christmas tells a different story. Through the incarnation of Jesus, the Light of the world entered our darkness and transformed us from the inside out.
Now, our very identity is light in the Lord. Jesus has turned on the light in our lives, filling us with His presence and giving us His Spirit to guide us. The evidence of that transformation shows up in everyday ways—goodness, righteousness, and truth radiating through how we live and love. The “after” picture is stunning because it begins to look like Jesus.
This is what Christmas means: once darkness, now light. A before-and-after story worth treasuring, pondering, and celebrating.
