Our kids are growing up surrounded by messages telling them who they are.
Their appearance. Their abilities. Their friendships. Their accomplishments. Their failures.
So how do we help our children recognize when they’re struggling with identity—and point them back to what God says is true?
In this episode of Everyday Prayers with Million Praying Moms, Brooke McGlothlin and Sissy Goff have a conversation about three ways to recognize when our children are struggling with identity and how we can help them build an identity rooted in Scripture.
Here are three things to watch for:
- Notice comparison. Is your child constantly measuring themselves against others?
- Pay attention to perfectionism. Does your child feel like they have to get everything right to be enough?
- Listen for approval-seeking. Is your child’s sense of worth becoming dependent on what others think of them?
As moms, we can help our children recognize these struggles and remind them that their worth isn’t found in what they accomplish, how they look, or what others think of them. Their identity is found in Christ.
Philippians 1:6 reminds us that God is still working in our children: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
We can’t control every voice our children will hear, but we can make sure they regularly hear the voice of truth.
