Motherhood can feel like a constant invitation to do more.
More laundry. More meals. More appointments. More activities. More needs to meet, problems to solve, and people to care for.
In this week’s Everyday Prayers Summer Book Club, author Shalene Roberts continues the discussion of When Mothering is Hard and No One Sees, exploring two practical kingdom practices that help us step out of the pressure to do more and instead remain connected to Christ: immersing ourselves in God’s Word and embracing rest.
Shalene reminds moms that abiding in Christ means staying connected to the Vine, even when our time with God looks different in different seasons of motherhood. Whether you have 30 minutes, 10 minutes, or just a few moments to read a Psalm, God’s Word is never wasted. Rather than seeing time in Scripture as another task to check off, we can receive it as a gift and an invitation to remain close to Him.
The conversation also explores the gift of rest. Instead of waiting for the next season, vacation, or quiet moment to finally feel rested, Shalene encourages moms to recognize that true rest is found in the person of Jesus. By intentionally creating rhythms of rest—including Sabbath rest—we can slow down, reconnect with God and our families, and receive the restoration He offers.
For the mom who feels overwhelmed, spiritually depleted, or simply stretched thin, this conversation offers a simple reminder: we don’t have to do motherhood in our own strength. We can return to the Vine, immerse ourselves in His Word, and rest in Him.
