Matthew 26:42 — “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”
My daughter Josie is incredibly persistent. If she wants something—like a popsicle in the middle of winter—she’ll ask again and again. Even after I’ve said no, she’ll come back the next day asking, “Is it warmer today?” hoping the answer has changed. She just really wants that popsicle.
That kind of persistence reminds me of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. We often focus on His anguish, but sometimes overlook that He went away and prayed a second time, asking the same thing: “Your will be done.” Jesus didn’t repeat His prayer because He thought God hadn’t heard Him. He knew the Father was listening. But in that moment, He showed us something important about persistence.
Jesus taught this same idea in the parable of the persistent widow in Luke 18—keep praying and don’t lose heart. Even though God already knows what we need, He still invites us to ask. Not because He needs convincing, but because prayer draws us closer to Him.
Sometimes it feels like we’re bothering God when we bring the same request over and over, but that’s not how He sees it. Each time we come to Him, we’re choosing to trust Him. We may not always get the answer we want, but we will always receive peace in His presence.
Prayer doesn’t just change outcomes—it changes us. It strengthens our trust and reminds us that God knows what’s best. So we can keep coming back to Him, again and again, confident that He hears us and meets us there.
