We often read the opening line of Genesis — “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” — without really stopping to think about it. The universe is unimaginably vast, with stars so far away their light takes billions of years to reach us. And yet Scripture says God spoke it all into existence. In Book of Job 38, He asks, “Where were you when I established the earth?”—a reminder of His unmatched power.
What’s striking is how that same power is paired with gentleness. After Adam and Eve sinned and hid, God didn’t respond with destruction. He asked, “Where are you?” Even in judgment, He cared for them, clothed them, and protected them from a worse fate. Throughout the Bible, this pattern continues: the God who can shake the earth, as described in Psalms 18, is also the One who steadies and protects His people.
True gentleness isn’t weakness—it’s strength held back for the sake of someone else. The Creator of the universe chooses mercy. The One who set the stars in place is the same God who seeks us out and watches over us, as Psalm 121 reminds us. In a universe this vast, that truth is both humbling and deeply comforting.
