In this episode of the Everyday Prayers Podcast, Nicolet Bell and author Christy Thomas explore the difference between biblical gentleness and the modern concept of “gentle parenting.” Christy explains that while gentle parenting rightly emphasizes empathy, compassion, and seeing children as image-bearers of God, it can sometimes drift into permissiveness when boundaries and discipline are missing. True biblical gentleness, she says, is “strength under control” — parenting with both compassion and authority, just as Jesus models for us.
The conversation encourages parents to move beyond simply empathizing with their children and instead guide them toward growth, repentance, and heart change through the power of the Holy Spirit. Both moms acknowledge how exhausting this kind of intentional parenting can feel in the middle of everyday family life, but remind listeners that God never intended for parents to do it alone. Through prayer and dependence on Christ, parents can model the gentleness of Jesus while confidently praying for God to transform both their own hearts and the hearts of their children.
