Most of us know what it feels like to be misunderstood, criticized, or unfairly judged. But what we often forget is this: Jesus knows that feeling too.
Throughout His life, Jesus faced skepticism, rejection, and outright hostility. He was questioned because of where He came from. He was accused of wrongdoing despite living a sinless life. He was mocked, insulted, and ultimately condemned in a deeply unjust trial. And yet, in every moment, He responded with remarkable restraint and unwavering trust in God.
Instead of retaliating, Jesus chose gentleness.
He responded to doubt with kindness. He met misunderstanding with truth. He endured cruelty without threats. As 1 Peter reminds us, “When he was reviled, he did not revile in return… but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.”
This kind of response doesn’t come naturally. It’s not weakness—it’s strength under control. It’s a deliberate choice to trust God as the ultimate judge instead of taking matters into our own hands.
If we want to grow in this kind of strength, it starts in the small moments: the offhand comment, the misunderstood text, the minor offense. Learning to respond with gentleness in these situations prepares us for the bigger challenges.
Following in Christ’s steps means choosing trust over retaliation, humility over pride, and gentleness over defensiveness.
And when we do, we often find that God moves most powerfully—not in our self-defense, but in our surrender.
