“Do not resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also…” — Matthew 5:39–41
If you’re honest, these words from Jesus can feel impossible.
Turn the other cheek? Give more when something is taken from you? Go the extra mile when you’re already stretched thin? Everything in us resists that kind of response. It feels weak. And no one wants to feel weak.
But what if Jesus wasn’t describing weakness at all?
What if He was revealing a deeper kind of strength?
Our natural instincts tend to fall into two categories. When we’re hurt, we either shrink back in weakness—wounded, quiet, and defeated—or we rise up in retaliation, determined to prove our strength. But Jesus offers a third way: gentleness.
And gentleness is not weakness.
It takes very little strength to lash out or shut down. But it takes incredible power and self-control to stand firm, refuse revenge, and respond with grace. Turning the other cheek isn’t about becoming a doormat—it’s about choosing a posture of strength that trusts God more than our impulses.
We see this perfectly in Jesus Himself.
He is called the Lion of Judah—powerful, sovereign, commander of all creation. At any moment, He could have stopped the suffering, silenced His enemies, or walked away from the cross. But He didn’t.
He is also the Lamb of God—gentle, willing, and sacrificial.
Jesus didn’t endure the cross because He was powerless. He chose it because He had a mission: to make a way for us to have a relationship with Him. His gentleness was not the absence of power—it was power, perfectly restrained and purposefully directed.
And that same power is available to us.
Every day, we’re faced with moments where we can respond in weakness, react in force, or walk in gentleness. Choosing gentleness won’t come naturally. In fact, most of us will get it wrong more often than we’d like. But that doesn’t disqualify us—it reminds us of our need for Jesus.
Because of His sacrifice, we’re forgiven when we fail. And through His Spirit, we’re empowered to grow.
So the next time you’re hurt, offended, or pushed beyond your limits, pause and ask: what would it look like to choose gentleness here?
Not because it’s easy.
But because it reflects the strength of Christ in you.
